These warm, cozy indulgences are perks we look forward to all year long. And while it’s perfectly acceptable to partake in these comforts, winter weather shouldn’t be an excuse to remain sedentary. Here are some ways to stay active during the colder months and beat the winter bulge.
Hit the Gym
A gym membership is a great way to stay active when winter weather keeps you indoors. Most gyms offer a variety of classes and equipment, allowing you to change up your routine and keep things interesting. Better yet, you have the opportunity to build friendships with staff and gym members who have goals similar to yours. This is a great way to develop a support system and find accountability partners!
Stick With Your Routine
If you enjoy walking or running outside during the warmer months, you may feel like hanging up your athletic shoes for the off season. But putting your fitness regimen on hold can amount to a substantial setback. It’s better to scale back on your training during the winter than give it up completely. Make a goal to bundle up and brave the weather at least three times a week. Or, take your training indoors to the elliptical, stationary bike, or treadmill. You’ll maintain more of your fitness, and you won’t have to start from scratch in the spring.

Why not break a sweat in your own living room? Check out your local library or video store for a variety of instructional workout DVDs. Yoga, Pilates, kickboxing and Zumba are just a few programs available to get you burning calories within the comfort of your own home.
